What is Occupational Performance Coaching?

Have you found yourself googling things like, ‘How do I support my child's daily routines?’, ‘How can I help my child become more independent?’  or ‘How can I get my kids to get dressed in the morning’?

We can help you build the skills to support your child's participation in everyday life – and make your parenting experience more enjoyable.

OPC is an evidence-based coaching program for parents of autistic or developmentally delayed kids, or those who could use some extra support.
In collaboration with an experienced OT, you will:

  • Set goals that matter to your family
  • Discover solutions that work for your unique situation
  • Implement practical strategies that fit into your everyday life
  • Learn skills that will apply to new situations long after your sessions end

What to expect

Your OT will support you throughout the coaching process, while recognising that you are the expert on your own child. Our coaching process is:

Strengths-based - recognising what's already working for your family.

Goal-focused - helping you work towards goals that are meaningful to you – as well as realistic, achievable and meaningful within their own family life.

Empowering - supporting you to discover solutions that fit your family's values, routines and priorities.

During sessions, together you and your OT will:

  • Identify meaningful goals
  • Explore what's helping and what's getting in the way
  • Consider different strategies and approaches
  • Develop practical solutions that suit your family
  • Agree on actions to continue working on between appointments
  • Reflect on what's working between sessions
  • Adjust your plan as your goals evolve

Who is OPC for?

Occupational Performance Coaching is suitable for parents and caregivers of children aged 0–9.

Many of the families we support have children with autism, developmental delay or other developmental support needs. However, our therapy is based on your child's individual strengths, goals and support needs, rather than diagnosis alone.

If you're unsure whether this service is right for your family, contact us and our team will be happy to help.

Frequently asked questions

Is OPC therapy for my child or for me?

OPC is a parent coaching program. Your child does not attend the sessions. Instead, your occupational therapist works with you to develop strategies that help you support your child's functioning at home and in everyday life.

What happens during an OPC session?

Each 60-minute coaching session focuses on the goals you've identified for your child and family. Your occupational therapist will help you explore challenges, develop practical strategies and reflect on what's working between sessions.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions is determined collaboratively between you and your occupational therapist. The standard intervention period is typically 2–8 sessions.

Can OPC be delivered by telehealth?

Yes. OPC can be delivered face-to-face in our Subiaco or Joondalup clinics in Perth, or to you wherever you are, via telehealth.

Can I access OPC if my child is already receiving occupational therapy?

No, OPC is not available if your child is currently receiving occupational therapy. If you're unsure which CliniKids service is most appropriate to support your family, please contact us and one of our friendly Client Support Officers will help guide you.
