What is a functional capacity assessment?
At CliniKids, we offer functional capacity assessments for young children, particularly those with autism, to understand the picture of abilities and support needs.
Our assessments help families and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) ensure that children receive the right level of support, resources, and funding to achieve their goals during this critical stage of development.
Functional capacity assessments are designed to evaluate a child’s functional abilities across key areas of daily living, communication, social interaction, and play. Our goal is to ensure that children with autism receive the appropriate early intervention supports they need to thrive.
A functional capacity assessment may be requested by the NDIS and stated in your plan, or a participant may request a functional capacity assessment to provide evidence why they may need an increase in funding or a review of their current funding.
Why choose CliniKids?
Our experienced team of Occupational Therapists and Early Childhood Specialists offer a family-centred approach to functional capacity assessments.
We tailor our assessments to the unique needs of each child, working closely with parents, caregivers, and other involved parties to ensure a comprehensive and accurate understanding of the child’s strengths and challenges.
We also ask about parent stress and support needs of parents that is beyond what is expected of a child their age.
Our approach includes:
- Personalised assessments: Each assessment is designed to meet the specific needs of the child, using standardised tools, parent interview, child observation and assessment.
- Holistic evaluation: We assess the developmental domains of self-care, mobility/ motor development, communication, learning, social interaction and self management.
- Collaboration with families and support networks: With consent, we communicate with teachers, and other professionals involved in the child's care to gather insights and ensure an accurate, well-rounded assessment.
- Clear reporting: After the assessment, we share a detailed report outlining the child’s strengths, functional impact on their daily life and support needs including goals and recommendations for appropriate supports. We ensure our report recommendations meet the ‘reasonable and necessary’ criteria as required by the NDIS.
